ZOMBIE Week – iZombie Coming in 2015

In 2015 the world will see the launch of a new television show, airing on The CW in the US (channels elsewhere not yet known), iZombie will be, in the words of those who have caught glimpses of the show, a mixture of Buffy and Veronica Mars. Will Zombies be the new vampire of network telelvision? We saw vampires become big business and mainstream powerhouses in the last few years with the popularity of shows like True Blood, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, so it’s almost inevitable that the living dead, thrust back into the mainstream by the hugely popular Walking Dead, will see more television productions, and iZombie is an upcoming one that could do very well.

Loosely based on a DC Vertigo comic book series by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, a series nominated for an Eisner Award in 2011. The story should appeal to fans of the genre while also doing well with the general public. The main character of the story is Olivia Moore, a medical student who is on the road to a successful life but unfortunately finds herself on the food end of a zombie buffet. Attempting to blend in as a human being, “Liv” takes a job at a coroner’s office as a way to keep her brain-munching on the “down-low”. She finds though, with each brain she eats she sees visions from the point of view of the murder victim that she is chewing on. Posing as a psychic, Liv helps assist a detective in finding the people responsible. Though not exactly as great as being a walking, living human being again, Liv finds that at least she has meaning again.

This sounds, to me, like it could be very entertaining. It reminds me of “Chew” in many ways, the Image Comics series, and the premise, mixing horror with crime drama with comedy could be a raging success, and I hope it is. I like my underground and low budget zombie flicks, I like my mainstream and blood spewing modern zombie films, I like my classic zombie movies, but I also like when something comes out of left field and takes me by surprise, and this, iZombie, could just be the show to do that when it premiers next year.
